Composed in 1982, it was inspired by reading Theodor Adorno's comments on Stravinsky's Petrushka. The scenario was created first, then the music was composed to closely coordinate with specific dramatic and choreographic ideas.
The piece is 20 minutes in three movements.
The Suite from The Voyage is 11 minutes and also for 4-hand-piano.
